Afterlife is a project about what comes next. What happens after death? Is there a loss of life’s inherent beauty? By scanning creatures after they have died, these images explore the concept of beauty in the grotesque. The range of subjects’ state of decay, from fresh and preserved to a late stage of decomposition, is an attempt to thoroughly understand how a body can be transformed after its peak of existence. Through the process of scanning these subjects, I aim to capture as much detail as possible with maximum sharpness. Through my scanner’s “lens”, I can capture unseen details and magnify them to be larger-than-life. Some of these creatures had recently died, while others had been deceased for a long time. The fresher objects were not held to a higher standard than those that were less whole. The degraded ones were often more interesting to observe. Their decay does not diminish their value; instead, it reveals an unexpected beauty in what is often overlooked.
